Deep within the ruins of Eldena Abbey, located just outside the Hanseatic city of Greifswald, lie secrets and treasures that have captured people’s imaginations for centuries. These mystical walls, once the seat of a wealthy abbey, are now nothing more than ruins, but their underground vaults are said to still hold amazing things. According to legend, a dark passageway in the depths of the ruins leads to a large chamber containing a table next to which stands a huge black carriage guarded by an equally dark poodle. This image fires the imagination of visitors and fuels speculation about hidden treasures and supernatural forces lurking in these vaults. About a hundred years ago, two Capuchin monks from Rome are said to have traveled to Eldena to search for a hidden door in the ruins. They seemed to know the premises well and instructed a local servant to remove the rubble at a specific location. Sure enough, a door was found there, which opened by itself when the Capuchins touched it. The Capuchins entered with the farmhand and passed through several rooms in which nothing unusual could be seen. But then they came to a room in which several people appeared to be busy writing. The Capuchins spoke secretly with those present before leaving. When the servant finally returned to the surface, he realized that he had been absent for three years without realizing it and had already been declared dead. There was no trace of the two Capuchins; it was almost as if they had never existed and it had all been a figment of the servant’s imagination. What exactly had happened in the depths remained a mystery forever. Since then, many legends have grown up around the monastery ruins and the hidden treasures that are believed to lie in their vaults. Time and again, adventurers and treasure hunters venture down into the darkness in the hope of finding the legendary riches. But the search for treasure is risky. Some report eerie apparitions that send the intruders fleeing. Others disappear without a trace into the depths, never to reappear. Despite the dangers, the monastery ruins exert an irresistible fascination. For many, it is the allure of the hidden and mystical that captivates them.
