The Secrets of Nové Město nad Metují Castle: Stories, Legends, and Myths from Bohemia

In the heart of the Bohemian region lies the picturesque Nové Město nad Metují Castle, an architectural gem whose history is interwoven with secrets, legends, and fascinating events. With its impressive location on a rocky outcrop above the Metuje River and its magnificent Renaissance style, it attracts not only art and culture lovers, but also history buffs and those in search of myths. Yet behind the magnificent facades lies far more than just a historically significant structure—the walls of this castle tell of times long past, of ghosts, and of dark secrets.

The Castle’s Historical Development – Nové Město nad Metují was founded in the early 16th century and is closely linked to the history of the town of the same name. The castle was built after the town was founded by King Vladislav II in 1501. The nobleman Jan Černčický of Kácov played a key role in the castle’s construction, which was intended to serve as protection against external enemies. However, it did not remain in the family’s possession for long; due to financial difficulties, he sold the estate, and it changed hands several times over the centuries. After a devastating fire in 1526, the castle was converted into a Renaissance palace under the direction of Zikmund. Particularly noteworthy were the ornate balconies, which still overlook the rolling landscape today, as well as the delicate frescoes and the elaborate interior decoration. Later, in the 18th century, the estate attained Baroque splendor through renovations that further embellished the façade and the interior. But the castle was not only a witness to architectural beauty and changing owners—it also became the scene of mystical events and tragic occurrences.

The Ghost of the White Lady – As with many castles in Bohemia, there is a legend here of a “White Lady.” According to local tales, the White Lady is said to wander the castle’s corridors, especially on dark autumn evenings when the wind whistles through the valleys and the leaves swirl to the ground. It is said she is the ghost of a former servant who was once to be rewarded by the lord of the castle for her loyalty but met a tragic end due to intrigue. Since then, she has haunted the rooms at night, seeking justice. Her appearance is viewed by some as an omen—those who see her are said to either experience great fortune or be warned of impending danger. The White Lady has also left her mark on local folklore. Every year, the story is retold during night walks as part of the autumn festival, and numerous visitors report eerie encounters or strange noises during their stay at the castle. Whether this is reality or merely a product of the locals’ imagination, however, remains a mystery.

A Curse from the Past? – Another mystery surrounding the estate is the so-called “curse of the first owner.” According to legend, Jan Černčický, the original builder of the castle, is said to have cast a curse before his death because he was forced to sell his beloved estate. The curse states that none of the future owners would be able to enjoy the castle without worry or unrest, and indeed, throughout the castle’s history, there have been repeated financial problems or political conflicts that plagued the owners. This superstition is still upheld by the town’s residents to this day. Some firmly believe that the curse is responsible for the fact that managing the castle and its lands has always been fraught with challenges. Others, however, suspect that these are merely coincidences that have simply occurred time and again.

The Hidden Treasure of Nové Město nad Metují – Even more exciting than ghostly apparitions or curses is the legend of a hidden treasure said to lie somewhere in the castle’s deep cellars. Nineteenth-century travelers reported finding old documents suggesting that a former owner had hidden his most valuable possessions to protect them from enemies. The treasure is said to consist of gold coins, gemstones, and valuable works of art—yet its exact whereabouts remain unknown to this day. Over time, archaeologists and treasure hunters have explored various areas of the castle and its surroundings, but so far only insignificant artifacts have been found that could not provide any clues to the mythical treasure. Nevertheless, the search for the mysterious gold remains an exciting story that attracts new adventurers every year.

Modern Use and Connection to the Past – Despite its rich history and the dark myths and legends that surround it, Nové Město nad Metují Castle serves a peaceful purpose today: it functions as a cultural center where exhibitions, concerts, and events are held regularly. Visitors can not only admire the imposing rooms and gardens but also learn more about the castle’s historical development and local folklore. In particular, the well-maintained castle garden, characterized by renowned early 20th-century landscape architecture, is a highlight for tourists and locals alike. The garden, which contrasts with the region’s rugged natural landscape through its geometric forms and elegant design, conveys a sense of harmony and timeless beauty.

The Castle as a Symbol of Mystery and Inspiration – Nové Město nad Metují Castle is far more than a monument to times past—it is a place where history comes alive and legends and myths have found their home. The combination of opulent interiors, breathtaking views, mysterious myths, and its modern use makes it a cultural treasure of Bohemia.

Whether it’s the White Lady, the curse of the first owner, or the hidden treasure—one thing is certain: the castle exudes a mystical atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor. It is a place that sparks the imagination while inviting you to delve into the depths of history.
