The castle gave its name to a branch of the family, which henceforth called itself ‘von Waldeck’. Over the centuries, the complex underwent numerous alterations and changes. Originally built as a fortress, it later became the residence of the Counts of Waldeck. From 1655, however, the family moved to Arolsen, and the castle lost its function as a noble residence. Yet its history was far from over. From military installations to a women’s prison and a penal institution, Waldeck Castle underwent many transformations. Until 1868, it served, among other things, as a prison for female offenders – a grim chapter that is documented in the museum today.
Architecture with stories – a tour of the castle – The experience begins at the lower round gate by the Powder Tower, whose coat of arms of the Waldeck-Pyrmont line is still preserved today. There, loopholes can also be seen, serving as a reminder of the complex’s military past. Here stands the remarkable castle well, which, at a depth of around 120 metres, represents a masterpiece of medieval engineering. The laborious process of pumping water uphill required hours of work using a gear system – a method that was as fascinating as it was arduous. Whether the water feature planned in 1612 was ever realised remains a mystery to this day. The path continues through the Obertor, from where you reach the inner courtyard. Here stand buildings that once served various functions. Particularly impressive is the ‘Wildunger Flügel’, named after the Counts of Wildungen, who resided here between 1500 and 1577. The octagonal tower building is adorned with ornate coats of arms referring to the various branches of the Counts of Waldeck family. Oil mills, water tanks and old baking ovens in the cellar bear witness to a time when life at the castle was characterised by self-sufficiency. The keep, the centrepiece of the complex, rises imposingly into the sky. With its walls over three metres thick, made of Edersee greywacke, it is not only an architectural marvel but also a silent witness to many historical events. Over the years, it has served various purposes – from an archive tower to a water tower. Today, it invites visitors to enjoy the view of the surrounding landscape and marvel at the centuries-old walls. Another highlight is the Altane, a spacious terrace to the south of the castle. Here, you not only stand before impressive 19th-century cannons but also enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Edersee and the surrounding forests. The so-called ‘Kaak’, a reconstructed pillory, serves as a reminder that everyday life at the castle was not always characterised by courtly elegance.
Mysticism and legends: what makes Waldeck Castle so special – The history of Waldeck Castle is steeped in legends and myths that continue to captivate visitors to this day. One of these legends tells of a secret chamber deep beneath the castle, where treasures are said to be hidden. Although archaeologists have so far found no clear evidence of this, the story attracts adventurous treasure hunters to Waldeck. Another legend tells of ghostly apparitions within the ancient walls, particularly in the former cells of the women’s prison. Voices, footsteps and shadows are said to have been seen here – a reminder of the tragic fate of the women who were once imprisoned here. Even though such stories often contradict historical facts, they lend the castle a special aura. They spark the imagination and make a visit an experience that goes far beyond mere historical facts.
Waldeck Castle today: A place for culture and relaxation – Today, Waldeck Castle presents itself as a modern leisure and cultural centre. The historic buildings have been extensively renovated in places and now house a hotel and a restaurant. A particular attraction is the castle museum, whose ‘Behind Bars’ exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the history of the women’s prison. With the help of an audio guide system, visitors can stroll through the rooms at their own pace and immerse themselves in the turbulent past. The view from the castle is unforgettable: on clear days, the vista stretches as far as the imposing dam of Lake Eder and deep into the Kellerwald forest. For nature lovers, the Waldeck Mountain Railway is another attraction, as it connects the castle with the sights along the lakeshore.
